About the Album

Funky Lamp explores something new with every song that they write. While always grounded in funk, the four piece has combined alternative, indie, folk, punk, metal, latin, soul and jazz into a hybrid genre that could best be described as “it’s complicated.” Funky Lamp’s debut album, “In Light of Changes,” articulates this unique sound in a short-and-sweet seven-song LP debuted March 1st, 2024. The album launch was accompanied by a legendary concert with supporting acts Wild Blue Yonder and Trip Lotus, two longtime friends of the band.

Production

Produced by guitarist Ben Orr in collaboration with longtime Funky Lamp mixing/mastering engineer Greg Doyle, In Light of Changes was created after the difficult decision to scrap a previously recorded album being produced by original drummer Rocco Condenzio’s father. Orr recorded singer Holly Miller’s vocals, drummer Frank Mileto’s bass, and himself on guitar (and bass, for one track written after Mileto’s transition to drums. He’s really proud of that, if you can’t tell). Percussion was recorded with producer Matt Very of Very Tight Recordings in Sharpsburg, PA, with Mileto on drums and auxiliary percussion. Additionally, Wild Blue Yonder bassist and guitarist Dan Sawyer added keys for some songs. Communicating largely through an excessively long Google doc, Orr and Maryland-based Doyle traded production ideas and mix notes as the songs took shape.
